About Us

What We’re About

W&SCC aims to be a traditional and inclusive cricket club. The senior men’s side plays only friendly Sunday home fixtures, for the love of the game; while the club offers junior cricket from the age of 5 upwards, introducing the best of our young talent to senior cricket when they are ready. Our Warboro Warriors provide girls cricket and is working hard to provide a regular women’s white ball team.

If you’d like a change from league cricket, or fancy learning the game, or if you’d like to know more about playing for the women’s side, or have kids interested in playing, then please click below for our contacts.

Senior Cricket

The senior team plays sociable but competitive non-league cricket against an eclectic mix of nomadic sides. We're keen to get all selected players involved in each game, whatever their individual standard. We encourage our youth players (boys and girls) to play, and always welcome new players!

Matches are generally scheduled to start in the afternoon around 2pm. We generally play ‘timed’ matches with a delicious and leisurely tea taken between innings.

Fixtures are against nomadic and touring teams from across the south. Our season runs every Sunday from late April until late September.

Junior Cricket

We run a thriving Junior Cricket section to cater for boys and girls between 5 and 15 years of age.

We run the ECB programmes All-Stars Cricket (5-8 year olds), and Dynamos Cricket (8-11 year olds).

We're very mindful of promoting participation for girls, several of whom have played for our Senior team too, as they’ve progressed.

Club History…

Cricket has been played on Warborough Green for 170 years. In the early years matches were ‘horse and cart' family affairs, with away fixtures played against local villages.

An early '60s revival by Club stalwart Maurice Holloway reinvigorated the Club, with sporting declaration games played on a Saturday or Sunday.

…Great Times

In the ‘70s and '80s, our leading player, Mike Hobbs, had strong connections with Somerset CC, which resulted in stars such as Viv Richards, Ian Botham and Joel Garner playing on The Green at Warborough – much to the delight of the local spectators.

As it progresses happily towards its double century, the Club looks forward to confidently preserving the best of cricket’s traditions in the charming surroundings of Warborough Green.

On Film

The Green has featured in several films and TV series, most notably the 2015 film ‘The Go Between’, featuring Jim Broadbent, Vanessa Redgrave & Lesley Manville. A pivotal cricket scene between the two major male characters takes place in the middle. Several Warborough players were lucky enough to take part in a few days’ filming!

Stephen Fry & Hugh Lawrie shot an episode of ‘Jeeves & Wooster’ here. And ‘Midsomer Murders’ has also used Warborough Green regularly as a film location. This includes several episodes filmed in The Six Bells, where DCI Barnaby and Sergeant Troy enjoy a pint whilst they discuss a case…
